Compositions to navigate, not just observe.

Steve Medwin is a fiber artist working in digital free-standing lace embroidery. Using thread as both line and structure, his pieces are created without fabric—where stitched thread forms self-supporting structures as the material sets and stiffens during drying.

His work explores what he calls navigable abstract art: compositions that invite the viewer to trace pathways, follow color, and experience movement through the piece. Each design begins intuitively, with lines that evolve into systems of connection, obstruction, and flow.

With a background in engineering, Medwin brings a structural awareness to his process, balancing precision with organic variation. Digital tools and embroidery techniques are used not for control alone, but to create spaces where order and unpredictability coexist.

Across his series, recurring themes include journey, constraint, transformation, and interconnectedness—offering viewers multiple ways to engage, interpret, and navigate the work.
